Nine asphalt plants received the 2013 Trillium Awards

There were nine asphalt plants that received the 2013 Trillium Awards recently, as well as four other plants that were recertified at this year’s Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association’s (OHMPA) annual Fall Asphalt Seminar on Dec. 11.
The award recognizes the best in asphalt production and requires recipients to meet a set of standards in seven categories: appearance, operations, environmental, safety, permitting and compliance, community relations and industry participation.
The nine awards went to Aecon Construction & Materials (Brampton, Goderich and Orangeville plants), G. Tackaberry & Sons Construction Co. (Tackaberry asphalt plant), and The Miller Group (Lavis Contracting Co. Holmesville asphalt plant, Mill-Am asphalt plant, The Murray Group Murphy and Bowman Pit plants and Smiths Construction, Turcotte Pit). The recertified plants were The Miller Group’s E.C. King, Sydenham asphalt plant and New Liskeard, Port Colborne, and Whitby asphalt plants.
“The asphalt industry works hard to make itself a good neighbour and a steward of the environment,” said OHMPA executive director Doug Duke.
“The award was created to recognize those plants that go beyond the ‘gold’ standard already required by industry regulations.”
There are total of 55 plants that have received the Trillium Award along with 35 recertified plants.
The Dr. Norman McLeod Award for Innovation in Road Building was also handed to Lye Moran, asphalt team leader for Imperial Oil’s Sarnia Research Centre.
Moran’s asphalt research has led to breakthrough’s recognized by 12 patents.
The first ‘Bleeds Black’ Awards, which highlights an individual’s commitment and passion toward the industry, were handed to University of Waterloo’s Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology director Dr. Susan Tighe, Walker Aggregates Vineland Asphalt Plan foreman Mark Cosby and OHMPA technical director Sandy Brown.
